SOFTWARE

There are a few programs that you can use to manage files and make disks. For more programs and a description of them, please check out Yahoo VFX Group.

In the future I plan to have a list of different programs and their descriptions just in case yahoo deletes their groups.

For the latest OS version of your Ensoniq VFX, VFXSD, and SD-1 Check out the EMU Support available in MAC and PC format.

NOTE: The latest operating systems from Microsoft, the Giebler utilities (used for making VFX floppy disks from internet obtained images) don't work, as they need low level access to the floppy drive hardware. So here is fdvfx.zip, a version of Freedos that starts up with a ramdisk. Extract the .zip archive, make a floppy disk with the install.bat command, copy EDE.EXE and whatever VFX disk image you want to make onto the floppy, and then reboot from this floppy. - http://www2.pro-ns.net/~steve/music.html

You will need winzip software to unpack the files.
    o VFXLIB

A "librarian" under Windows 3.1 for the Ensoniq VFX synth familly. Freeware
    o Soundlib VFX Software

SoundLib v1.01, a synthesizer librarian for Windows. Easy to use with database features. Supports more than 17 synths (see below). Compatible with Cakewalk for Windows 2.0, 3.0 + Cakewalk Audio Pro. Freeware

Binary Files

Below are links to the files Ensoniq orignally offered on their website in 1997.

The following files contain either disk images (for Operating Systems, Sound Samples, and Sound Programs) or SysEx (System Exclusive) data. Disk images are binary data formatted exactly as it would be on a diskette that you would use with your instrument.

When using disk image files, please keep in mind that ENSONIQ format disks are not formatted the way that PC or Mac diskettes are. You will need the Giebler EDE disk utility to create diskettes for your unit from the disk images.

For the SysEx files, you can use the SysEx Utilities to send the data to your unit.

Please note that the utility programs are PC (DOS) only.

Giebler EDE (ENSONIQ Disk Extractor)

    (EDE107.ZIP, 32 KB) - http://web.archive.org link

For ASR, EPS, TS, VFX, and SD instruments. This file enables you to convert existing disk image files into diskettes for use in your ENSONIQ instrument. You will need it to use any of the disk image files listed below. The file is in zip format. (You might want to check the EDE documentation as well.)

Giebler TESTBIOS utility

   (TESTBIOS.ZIP, 32 KB) - http://web.archive.org link

For ASR, EPS, TS, VFX, SD instruments. Tests your computer's BIOS to verify that it is indeed capable of all of the wondrous things listed above.

SysEx Utilities

    (SYSXUTIL.ZIP, 26 KB) - http://web.archive.org link

This ZIP archive contains 2 MS-DOS Sysex utilities from ENSONIQ: SYXDUMP.EXE and SYXRECV.EXE. These are both free programs which run on IBM PCs (or compatibles) with an MPU-401 compatible MIDI interface card.

Both programs are "no-frills" MS-DOS command-line utilities, but they work with ALL SysEx messages of any type on ALL Ensoniq keyboards and modules. A READ.ME file is included.
